Mae Mai, a 30-year-old elephant, has endured a lifetime of unimaginable suffering.
From brutal logging work to a devastating leg injury, she spent decades in cruel conditions that would break the spirit of any creature.
When discovered by a river, she appeared prematurely aged, standing motionless as if the world had already abandoned her.
But hope arrived. Mae Mai’s rescue was nothing short of miraculous. Within days at Elephant Nature Park, she began showing signs of relief, eating ravenously and relaxing for the first time in years. Her X-rays revealed horrific injuries: a dislocated skull, torn joints, a fractured tibia, and swollen soft tissue — evidence of decades of abuse and neglect.
Dr. Tom and the veterinary team immediately launched a comprehensive recovery plan. Walking restrictions, pool therapy, joint support, pain management, vitamins, and wound care were just the start. Despite her trauma, Mae Mai showed remarkable courage, fully cooperating with her caregivers and even enjoying the occasional watermelon treat during IV therapy!
Her first steps into the pool brought tears to everyone’s eyes. Mae Mai splashed joyfully, soaking in the water as if reclaiming the freedom she had been denied for decades.
Wrapped in colorful blankets and treated with tender care, she began to thrive. Slowly, her posture improved, her movements grew confident, and she even bonded with her new friend Mae Sri, walking side by side through lush fields.
