Nova Scotia has officially approved Canada’s first-ever seaside whale sanctuary in Port Hilford Bay. For decades, marine mammals have suffered in captivity, confined to tanks that are tiny compared to the vast ocean they are meant to roam. Belugas, in particular, have endured years of unnatural confinement, and some even faced the grim threat of euthanasia after Marineland closed.
The Whale Sanctuary Project (WSP) will transform a sheltered cove into a safe, natural home—100 times larger than the cramped enclosures the whales once knew. Here, belugas will finally experience the rhythms of tides and seasons, swim freely, socialize, and receive compassionate, science-based care.
