Detroit, MI. The Detroit Lions opened their offseason with a bold move that quickly captured attention across the league. General manager Brad Holmes orchestrated a blockbuster trade that has already earned strong praise from national analysts.
Detroit agreed to send veteran running back David Montgomery to the Houston Texans in exchange for offensive lineman Juice Scruggs along with a fourth-round and seventh-round draft pick.

The move initially shocked many Lions fans. Montgomery had become a respected presence in Detroit’s offense and a fan favorite during his time with the team. However, as the details of the deal settled in, the broader football world began to view the transaction as a major strategic win for the Lions.
ESPN analyst Seth Walder gave Detroit an “A” grade for the trade, while Houston received a “D.” Walder emphasized that the value of the draft picks alone made the deal a strong outcome for Detroit, particularly considering Montgomery’s age and the team’s evolving offensive plans.
Scruggs, originally a second-round pick in 2023, is viewed as a developmental interior lineman. His performance metrics with Houston placed him in the lower percentiles in both pass-block and run-block win rates. Even so, Detroit sees him as a reclamation project who could provide depth across the interior offensive line.
More importantly, the draft capital acquired in the trade gives the Lions significant flexibility. The additional fourth-round selection could be used to target a young running back to pair with rising star
Jahmyr Gibbs, or it could become part of another deal as Detroit continues shaping the roster.
With Montgomery now in Houston, the Lions face a key decision regarding the future of their backfield. Gibbs remains the centerpiece of Detroit’s rushing attack, but the team will likely seek a complementary runner either through free agency or the upcoming draft.
Several veteran options could emerge on the market, including players such as J.K. Dobbins, Kenneth Gainwell, Tyler Allgeier, or James Conner if he becomes available.
Ultimately, the trade reflects Holmes’ long-term roster strategy. By turning an aging running back into multiple assets and a potential depth lineman, Detroit has created additional financial and roster flexibility while maintaining the ability to reshape the offense around its young core.
For now, the early reviews suggest the Lions may have pulled off one of the smartest moves of the offseason.
