The Diademed Tanager is distributed in south-east Brazil from south-east Minas Gerais to Rio Grande do Sul, Uruguay and adjacent areas of north-east Argentina and south-east Paraguay.
It is found in Araucaria and other montane forest types as well as in gardens and parks. It is often seen perched on top of bushes as in photo 2.
It is a very attractive dark purplish blue with black forehead, mask and chin. The wings are black with blue edging but the most distinctive feature is the red patch surrounded by white on the crown.
Sexes look alike but photo 4 shows an immature bird emerging from its sooty-black colouration.
