Tanager wears a crown (Stephanophorus diadematus): It has a very attractive deep purple-blue color with a black forehead, mask and chin. The wings are black with blue borders, but the most distinctive feature is the red patch surrounded by white on the crown.

The Diademed Tanager is distributed in south-east Brazil from south-east Minas Gerais to Rio Grande do Sul, Uruguay and adjacent areas of north-east Argentina and south-east Paraguay.
