Kudu cow excels at playing to the hyena’s strengths and exploiting its weaknesses, creating a truly humorous moment

After a three hour standoff and with his сһапсeѕ of survival looking slim, the kudu noticed a herd of zebra swimming across the waterhole in his direction, giving him the perfect opportunity to ɩoѕe himself in the сгowd.

As the zebra approached, the kudu dived into the water and foгсed his way in to the centre of the herd, making it almost impossible for the hyena to single him oᴜt.

Quick-thinking: The kudu, which is a kind of large antelope, tricked his way out of a hyena ambush by losing himself in a herd of zebra. The incident took place at a waterhole in Namibia's Etosha National Park

Trapped: The kudu had been drinking at the waterhole when he was surrounded by 14 hyenas who had been hunting nearby

Into the deep: The kudu ran out into the water, taking advantage of his long legs to wade out further than the hyenas could manage. From there he was able to take his time to rethink an escape route

Standoff: The kudu was able to stand just far enough into the water to ensure the hyenas could not reach him. A waiting game ensued, although the longer the kudu spent in the cold water, the tighter his muscles would have become - making a quick escape increasingly unlikely

Waiting game: Photographer Neal Cooper spent three hours watching the standoof. He claims the hyenas' hunting tactics have become increasingly deadly in recent years, so at the time thought it highly unlikely the kudu would be able to escape the waterhole

Although the kudu wasn't moving much in the water, he would have tired far quicker than the hyenas as the cold water stiffened his muscles and prevented rapid movement. Had the herd of zebra not arrived, the weary kudu would at some point have been forced to try and outrun the waiting hyenas
