Temminck’s sunbird is a species of sunbird. It is found in up to 1800 m altitude in Borneo, Sumatra, Malaysia, and south west Thailand in tropical moist montane forests. It has been considered conspecific with Javan sunbird, “Aethopyga mystacalis”.

I always enjoy seeing plenty of Temminck’s Sunbirds whenever I visit Borneo. It is possibly the only place where this beautiful little bird can still be seen easily. Unfortunately, this species is increasingly rare elsewhere including southern Thailand due to the illegal songbird trade. The male of this species along with some other sunbirds are particularly targeted because of their brightly coloured plumage. They typically can’t survive for long in captivity

Appearance

The Temminck’s sunbird is 10 cm -12.5 cm long. The longer-tailed male is mostly scarlet, except for a greyish Ьeɩɩу, yellow and purple bands between the back and tail, and four purple bands on the һeаd emanating from the beak. The female is drab olive, except for rufous fringes to the wing and tail feathers.
