“I couldn’t believe my eyes… this was straight out of a movie!”

A casual climb turned into a heart-stopping wildlife drama last month at Pennsylvania’s Susquehanna Riverlands State Park. Kelston, a thrill-seeking rock climber, was scaling jagged cliffs when something unusual caught his eye: feathers sticking out from under a massive rock. What he discovered next would leave even the bravest stunned.

A struggle for survival under cold stone
Kelston rushed to help, immediately calling the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR). What came next sounded like a real-life hero mission: DCNR dispatched their top rescuers — but they knew a wildlife expert was essential. Enter Maryann, a fearless capture-and-transport volunteer, who immediately sensed something shocking… there weren’t one, but TWO eagles trapped together under the rocks.
“I feared the worst for the second bird,” Maryann admitted. “The wings… I thought they were broken beyond hope.”
Race against time as dusk falls
With darkness approaching, wildlife rehabilitator Tracie Young and her team sprinted up the trail, gear in hand, ready to perform a daring rescue. The scene? Two majestic birds, crammed under boulders, fighting for their lives.
“I was like, ‘Dear God… these wings are broken,’” Young recounted. “It was horrific… but we couldn’t give up.”

After painstaking effort, rescuers freed the eagles, carefully placing them in secure crates. They were rushed to Raven Ridge Wildlife Center for emergency care — wounds cleaned, lead poisoning tested, and every ounce of courage restored.
Triumph of nature and human spirit
Weeks of therapy turned desperation into defiance. The eagles, once battered, grew strong, aggressive, and ready to reclaim the skies. By Veterans Day, the moment arrived: both birds soared free, reunited, and majestic beyond words.

“We believe they are a mated pair,” Raven Ridge wrote. “Releasing them together honors their bond and the resilience they embody — a true symbol of hope for Veterans Day.”
