🐯✨ Triple the Cuteness: Milwaukee County Zoo Welcomes New Amur Tiger Cubs!

The Milwaukee County Zoo is overjoyed to announce the birth of three adorable Amur tiger cubs to proud parents Amba and Strannik, both 13 years old. This is Amba’s second litter and Strannik’s fourth, proving they’re true experts in tiger parenting!

As of October 2, the tiny cubs weighed 5.6 lbs, 5.9 lbs, and 6.9 lbs. Zookeepers are keeping a close eye on their growth, making sure these little bundles are healthy and thriving. The zoo’s last tiger cubs arrived in 2009, with one of the females, Tula, still calling the zoo home.

The cubs are currently snuggled in a cozy off-exhibit den, nursing about 6–8 times a day. Though they’re still mastering their wobbly legs, they are beginning to stand and will likely start walking in about three weeks. Their eyes are open but not yet focusing, adding to their irresistibly tiny charm.

Zookeepers are monitoring the cubs around the clock through in-person checks and video surveillance, while maintaining a trusting bond with Amba using positive reinforcement training to ensure the safety and comfort of both mother and cubs.

While visitors won’t be able to see the cubs just yet, updates and sneak peeks will be shared on the Milwaukee County Zoo Facebook page.

The Amur tiger, also called the Siberian tiger, hails from the Sikhote Alin mountains and Russian Far East. These majestic cats are among the largest in the world, with males often outweighing lions by about 100 pounds. Amur tigers can have litters of two to four cubs, though sometimes up to six, and mate year-round with a gestation of 3–3½ months.

Sadly, this incredible species is endangered, threatened by poaching and habitat loss. With fewer than 400 Amur tigers remaining in the wild, conservation efforts are essential to ensure these magnificent animals survive for future generations.

Stay tuned as these tiny tigers grow and flourish under the loving care of the Milwaukee County Zoo team—a rare and precious glimpse of nature’s wonders!
