A Friendship Unlike Any Other: The Baby Elephant and the Orphaned Buffalo 💛🐘🐃

Kimani, a baby elephant, found himself all alone after falling into a well in central Kenya. Rescuers saved him, but his mother and herd were nowhere to be found. He was brought to Reteti Elephant Sanctuary for care and shelter.

Just two weeks later, a tiny orphaned buffalo named Siilai appeared nearby. Barely a week old, he needed help to survive. When he arrived at the sanctuary, something magical happened: Kimani and Siilai instantly became best friends.

Now, every day is a shared adventure. They wake up for morning walks, wrestle in the dirt, take mud baths, nap on each other, and sip giant bottles of milk every few hours. Kimani often nudges Siilai to start playtime, and together, they roll, tumble, and explore—always side by side.

“They lovingly play together,” says Katie Rowe, cofounder of the sanctuary. “Then they sleep deeply, knowing they have each other.”

Though elephants and buffaloes don’t usually bond like this in the wild, at Reteti, Kimani and Siilai have shown that friendship can transcend species. One can only hope that when the day comes for them to return to nature, their bond continues beyond the sanctuary.
