History was made at the Saint Louis Zoo as Bingwa, a cheetah whose name means “champion,” gave birth to an extraordinary litter of eight healthy cubs—three males and five females—on November 26. 🐆💖

In a world where most cheetahs have just three to four cubs, Bingwa shattered all expectations. Alone, she cared for her massive litter with unwavering dedication, grooming, nursing, and attending to every little cub. “She has quickly become adept at caring for her huge litter,” said Steve Bircher, the zoo’s curator of mammals and carnivores.
This remarkable birth marks a milestone in over 430 documented cheetah litters in zoos, proving that resilience, care, and maternal instinct can achieve the extraordinary. The cubs’ father, Jason, a nine-year-old cheetah, joins Bingwa in this remarkable journey, contributing to a genetically healthy population through the zoo’s River’s Edge Cheetah Breeding Center. Since 1974, the center has welcomed over 50 cheetah cubs, offering hope for a species facing grave challenges.

Once roaming across Africa and Asia, cheetah populations have drastically declined—about 10,000 remain in Africa, with fewer than 100 in Iran—due to human-wildlife conflict and limited genetic diversity. Programs like Saint Louis Zoo’s breeding efforts are vital lifelines for these incredible animals.
Bingwa and her cubs are thriving under the careful watch of dedicated caretakers, and while they remain out of public view for now, their story is one of triumph, hope, and the extraordinary power of life. 🌈✨
