In an act of compassion that touched hearts far beyond team lines, Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff has joined Shawn Kneeland, father of the late Dallas Cowboys defensive end
Just one day after Shawn Kneeland announced his decision to
donate his late son’s remaining $5.6 million salary to fund youth mental health initiatives, Goff personally reached out and traveled to Dallas to stand beside him at a candlelight vigil that drew fans, teammates, and community members together in remembrance and purpose.
“This goes beyond football,” Goff said softly. “It’s about humanity. What Shawn is doing — turning pain into purpose — reminds us that no matter the jersey we wear, we’re all connected by something greater than the game.”
Goff, known for his calm leadership and humility, was seen embracing Mr. Kneeland during the vigil, as the two shared a quiet moment of reflection. Together, they spoke about the foundation’s mission: to
fund mental health programs, mentorship, and counseling for young athletes battling emotional struggles or depression.

“My son looked up to players who led with compassion and courage,” Shawn said. “Seeing Jared here tonight, standing with me, means more than words can express. It shows that football can heal, not just entertain.”
Goff pledged $250,000 through the JG16 Foundation to expand the foundation’s reach into Michigan, helping youth programs across Detroit and Flint provide access to mental health resources. The Lions organization
also announced they will wear #94 decals on their helmets during Week 10 to honor Marshawn Kneeland’s memory.
As the candles flickered under the Dallas night sky, Shawn Kneeland whispered through tears:
“My son’s name will always stand for hope. And tonight, that hope burns brighter than ever.”
Even in loss, Marshawn Kneeland’s legacy continues to unite the NFL — reminding fans and players alike that compassion is the true measure of greatness.
