There are fewer than 500 of these colorful birds remaining, and it seems one of them may have found its way to Arlington Square business park in Bracknell.
Accountant Ben was enjoying lunch outside with a friend when he spotted the bird foraging for food near his office.
Ben, from Arborfield, Berkshire, said, “I have never seen anything like this before, and we were both very confused when we first spotted it.
I immediately reached for my phone to take a photo because I didn’t think anyone would believe me without evidence.
We found it quite amusing but then tried to come up with an explanation for its coloring.
There were no other pigeons or birds around, just this one pecking at the ground. It didn’t seem bothered by us at all.”
Pink pigeons are listed as vulnerable by conservationists and are mostly found in Mauritius and Madagascar in the Indian Ocean.
In 1991, pink pigeons were on the verge of extinction, with numbers plummeting to as low as 10.
The population of these tropical birds has gradually increased, and it is now estimated that there are around 500 of them in the wild.
There have been previous reports of pigeons changing color after consuming pink food, or fanciers deliberately dyeing their wings.
In 2015, a series of pink pigeon sightings throughout the UK were traced back to a pigeon fancier who claimed that dyeing the birds’ feathers helped protect them from falcons.
The RSPCA has warned against this practice, stating that it is unnecessary and could harm the birds if ingested.
