With silver bead Tanagers weigh 25 grammes (0.88 oz) and measure 18 centimetres (7 in) in length. Male adults have a rich red breast and neck, and their colour is velvety black.

It may be found in cultivated and light forested regions. Usually constructed in a shrub, the large cup nest often holds two green-blue eggs with blotches of black and brown.
