In an extraordinary display of resourcefulness, a 25-year-old elephant trapped in a canal in Welikanda, near Polonnaruwa in eastern Sri Lanka, was successfully rescued using a custom-made rope ladder.
The incident occurred on December 8 and involved a collaborative effort by the Department of Wildlife Conservation.
Video footage shows the elephant struggling in the canal waters before discovering the specially crafted ladder made from rope and tires. This ingenious tool was designed by wildlife officials specifically for this rescue mission.
Initially, the elephant attempted to climb a slippery slope along the canal but found it too difficult to navigate.
Recognizing the animal’s predicament, rescuers constructed the rope ladder to facilitate its escape.
In the video, the elephant attempts to pull itself out of the canal, only to slide back each time.
To guide the elephant towards the ladder, rescuers used firecrackers, ensuring it moved in the right direction without causing harm.
The rescue operation, lasting six hours, showcased the dedication and ingenuity of the wildlife team.
Despite multiple tries, the elephant’s determination paid off as it eventually climbed the ladder and reached safety.
This remarkable rescue highlights humans’ commitment to aiding and protecting wildlife in distress.
