After securing Kylian Mbappe, Real Madrid is reported to have reached an agreement to sign another top European star – Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen. Following their 36th La Liga title win, Real Madrid clinched their 15th Champions League crown in history with a 2-0 victory over Dortmund in early June.
However, many fans have pointed out the club’s continued need for a top-class center forward since Karim Benzema’s departure in the summer of 2023. This led Los Blancos to sign forward Kylian Mbappe after his departure from PSG. According to sources from Marca, Real Madrid’s ambition to build one of the greatest football teams in history doesn’t stop there. The talented young German player, Florian Wirtz, is their next target. Marca also reports that Real Madrid has agreed personal terms with Wirtz to recruit him in 2025.
If completed, this deal will see Florian Wirtz replace Jude Bellingham in the attacking midfield role, while the English player will be pushed back to play in the central midfield position. This could be Real Madrid’s plan to replace Toni Kroos, who left the club after last season’s Champions League final.
Reportedly valued at around 150 million euros, this transfer will set a new Bundesliga transfer record. The previous record was set when Barcelona signed Ousmane Dembele from Borussia Dortmund for 135 million euros in the summer of 2017. Real Madrid believes Wirtz is worth the price after his breakthrough season with Bayer Leverkusen, helping the team clinch the Bundesliga and German Cup double.
Wirtz is contracted to Bayer Leverkusen until 2027, after signing a 5-year extension in 2022. Managed by his representative and father, Wirtz may see the near future as an ideal time to leave his homeland and test his talents abroad.
