Two Fire Search Dogs from Lancashire have travelled to Turkey to help save lives after a devastating earthquake destroyed parts of the country, as well as Northern and Western Syria.

Taking to their social media, Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service described the past week as “exhausting” as they put together search and rescue teams in Turkey. As well as firefighters, the service’s ‘four-pawed friends’, Sid and Davey also tagged along to help.

The post states that the dogs “have done outstanding work alongside their handlers” and have “helped to save many lives.” However, whilst doing their work, the pair did suffer a few scratches and irritated eyes from the dusty air, but have been well-looked after by the International Search and Rescue vet team.

It appears that the dogs are now taking a “well-earned rest” after joining in with the search and rescue efforts. The earthquake was first recorded on 6 February, striking Southern and Central Turkey, as well as Syria.

Now, the death toll has surpassed 41,000, with people still being rescued despite being trapped in rubble for over 200 hours. With the world watching on as the devastation unfolded, people from across the world have joined in the efforts to support residents that have lost loved ones or seen their homes destroyed.

Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service have their own team of Fire Search Dogs to help investigate fires and rescue people trapped in buildings, amongst many other roles. They can also be deployed to natural disasters around the world, helping with earthquakes as well as hurricanes and wildfires.

For the Sid and Davey that have done their part, lots of social media uses flocked to the post to send over their well-wishes. One posted: “Thank you a million times over to these amazingly brave and selfless souls you are undeniably one of life’s gifts in every sense of the word.”
