Dogs are more than pets—they’re family, protectors, and sometimes, heroes. Duke, a courageous German Shepherd in South Africa, proved this in the most dramatic way.
While out for a walk with his owner, Gino Wensel, a knife-wielding robber tried to attack and rob them, as reported by Mail Online. Instantly sensing danger, Duke sprang into action, growling fiercely at the assailant. In a horrifying moment, the robber stabbed Duke in the head.

Despite the serious injury, Duke refused to back down, managing to scare the attacker away and protect his beloved owner. Gino, fearing the worst, was relieved to find his loyal companion still alive.

Rushed to the Animal Welfare Society of South Africa (AWSSA) by a friend, Duke received urgent care. Miraculously, the knife had missed his brain, and thanks to skilled veterinarians—and the clinic’s generosity, covering the treatment—Duke survived.

“Their love is so important, and to be able to rescue Duke and return him to Gino was absolutely great,” shared the AWSSA staff, celebrating a story of loyalty, bravery, and survival.
