Deep in the woods, rescuers stumbled upon a pit bull mix curled up on a bed of twigs and leaves, shivering and severely malnourished. The pup’s life hung by a thread—until help arrived just in time.
The World Animal Awareness Society led the rescue, with volunteer Cathy Gray approaching the frightened pup gently, offering treats to earn her trust. At first glance, Penny seemed big, but closer inspection revealed she was still a puppy, her adult teeth just starting to come in, and her body covered in sores and scabs.

With the Michigan Humane Society’s assistance, Penny was safely leashed and brought to a care facility. A thorough examination showed she was about six months old and battling internal parasites and a skin infection—both promptly treated.
At first, Penny mostly slept, recovering from the trauma she had endured. But as her strength returned, so did her playful, loving personality. After a month, she joined a unique rehabilitation program run by Refurbished Pets of Southern Michigan, which pairs shelter dogs with inmates for training and care.

During three months of intensive training at the Florence Crane Lakeland Correctional Institution, Penny learned basic commands and fun tricks, blossoming into a confident, friendly dog ready for adoption.
Her transformation captured hearts online, and the Falzone family, charmed by a Facebook video, decided to adopt Penny—along with her buddy, Barkley.
