
If it reaches 2052, the B-52 Stratofortress will become the first jet aircraft in history to serve a full century. Out of 744 built by Boeing, only 76 B-52H airframes remain activeâyet they still project power globally. The last rolled off the line in 1962. Same airframes. New war.

Third: maintenance simplicity. No stealth coatings. No climate-controlled hangars. The B-2 Spirit demands extreme upkeepâoften exceeding 100 maintenance hours per flight hour. Cost per flight hour: B-52 (~$70â90K) vs B-2 (~$150K+). The Stratofortress wins the sustainment war.
Fourth: modular warfare design. The B-52 separates mission systems from structure. Avionics, radar, and weapons evolve without redesigning the airframe. Thatâs why itâs now integrating AESA radar derived from the Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet and upgrading to Rolls-Royce F130 enginesâboosting efficiency and extending range.
Finally: mission evolution. Built for nuclear penetration, the B-52 now dominates as a standoff strike platformâlaunching cruise missiles from hundreds of miles beyond threat envelopes. The B-1 is non-nuclear. The B-52 still holds that card.
