Simply put, it could reveal if something is alive right now on Mars.

The process is as elegant as it is shocking. When IPLs are present, the GC-MS produces a distinctive spike on its readout — a chemical “fingerprint” of life. Once the organism dies, these bonds vanish within hours, leaving no trace.

“We didn’t know what to expect at first,” said Hirsch. “But this spike is a clear, undeniable indicator of viable life. If we ever find signs of life beyond Earth, this method could answer the first question everyone will ask: is it alive?”

While the Martian surface is brutally hostile — freezing temperatures and relentless radiation — the duo isn’t ruling anything out. With upcoming missions like ExoMars, which will drill deep into the Martian crust, the chances of finding living organisms increase dramatically.

Beyond Mars, this technique could even help detect life in icy moons of the outer solar system or in samples returned to Earth, potentially saving scientists millions in the search for extraterrestrial life.
