The news came during a routine 20-week scan: something wasn’t quite right with their unborn baby’s heart. For parents-to-be, this was the moment when all the excitement of pregnancy suddenly became clouded with worry.
But for Samantha and her partner, this would also be the beginning of a journey filled with unknowns, hope, and resilience.
At the time, the news was just the start. Doctors referred Samantha for additional scans, and over the course of the next few weeks, it became clear that their baby, whom they later named Jaxon, was born with multiple congenital heart defects.
Jaxon’s diagnosis was devastating — a hypoplastic aortic arch (HAA), transposition of the great arteries (TGA), a ventricular septal defect (VSD), and a double inlet left ventricle (DILV).
Each condition made Jaxon’s heart incredibly complex, requiring surgeries and medical interventions to survive. But despite the overwhelming news, Samantha and her partner knew they would fight for their son, no matter what.
For the rest of the pregnancy, Samantha underwent frequent monitoring, each appointment filled with anxiety and hope. They were well-informed about what to expect, thanks to the medical professionals who helped guide them through the process. But no amount of preparation could truly prepare them for the challenges that lay ahead.

When Jaxon was born in April 2024, it was an emergency C-section. Samantha and her partner were given just a few minutes to see their baby before he was whisked away for medical procedures.
The moments that should have been filled with the joy of holding their newborn were instead consumed with uncertainty and fear for his future. The doctors immediately began monitoring Jaxon closely, making sure to insert lines and other medical devices, knowing the critical nature of his condition.
Jaxon’s first few days were a blur of tests, procedures, and the harsh reality that their son would need immediate and extensive medical attention.
At only four days old, Jaxon had his first open-heart surgery, an essential procedure to address his hypoplastic aortic arch, which was threatening to close and obstruct blood flow to his body. The surgery also involved a band being placed around one of Jaxon’s ventricles to help his smaller ventricle function better.
The surgery was a success, and Jaxon’s recovery, though long, was nothing short of miraculous. Every day, Samantha and her partner saw their son getting stronger.
The medications that had been keeping him alive started to decrease as his health improved. With each passing day, they saw their baby boy show more signs of life, something they hadn’t dared hope for when they first heard his diagnosis.
A few days later, at eight weeks old, Jaxon was allowed to attempt his first oral feed. Samantha had longed for the moment when she could finally hold her baby and feed him in the most natural way.
But even after such progress, there were still many obstacles to overcome. When Jaxon was just ten days old, he suddenly started having seizures. It was a terrifying moment for Samantha and her partner, and their world was once again turned upside down.
Doctors immediately performed a CT scan and MRI, which revealed that Jaxon had suffered a brain bleed. The bleed was believed to be a side effect of being placed on the heart-lung bypass machine during his open-heart surgery. The family was devastated, but they knew they had to keep pushing forward.
Jaxon spent the next few days in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), receiving new medication and treatment to help stabilize him. Slowly but surely, Jaxon began to recover from the brain bleed, and after a total of three weeks in the hospital, he was finally strong enough to go home.
The next few months were a mixture of challenges and small victories. Jaxon’s condition was far from stable, and he still faced the looming prospect of another surgery.
But he was showing more signs of strength every day, and his family was there to support him through it all. They knew Jaxon’s journey was far from over, but they were also optimistic, knowing their son had already proven his resilience in ways they could never have imagined.
In March 2024, Jaxon had another surgery — a corrective procedure to repair his heart valve and stabilize his condition. This surgery was critical to ensuring that Jaxon could live a life free from constant heart failure. The surgery was a success, but as with everything in Jaxon’s journey, it wasn’t the end.
In August 2024, Jaxon underwent another surgery for his spina bifida. This spine operation was necessary to address the complications associated with his condition, and once again, the medical team worked tirelessly to give Jaxon the best chance at a future filled with possibilities.
Throughout this difficult journey, Samantha and her partner found support in various ways, but one of the most impactful sources of comfort came from Tiny Tickers, a charity dedicated to raising awareness about congenital heart disease and providing support to families going through similar experiences.
Tiny Tickers provided Samantha with invaluable resources and information, and the online support groups they joined helped her connect with other heart parents who understood her struggles firsthand. Knowing they weren’t alone made a world of difference in their emotional well-being.

As the months went by, Jaxon continued to thrive. Although he was still dealing with various health challenges, he was becoming the bright, happy boy they had always dreamed of
Jaxon started meeting his developmental milestones, and his family celebrated each and every one of them. He was a little fighter, full of spirit and love, and his family could not have been prouder of the little warrior he had become.
Looking back on their journey, Samantha is overwhelmed with gratitude. She knows that early detection and timely medical intervention played a huge role in saving Jaxon’s life.
Had his heart condition not been detected during pregnancy, their story could have had a very different outcome. The fact that they had the opportunity to prepare for his birth and for his medical needs made all the difference.
Samantha’s story is a reminder of the power of hope, the importance of early detection, and the unyielding strength of a mother’s love. It also highlights the remarkable resilience of children like Jaxon, who face seemingly insurmountable odds and, with the right support and care, grow into bright, thriving individuals.
Jaxon’s journey is far from over, but his family is confident that, together, they will face whatever challenges come next. Their little boy has already proven that he is a survivor — and nothing will stop him from reaching for the stars.
