Male Wine-throated Hummingbird Selasphorus ellioti in the Guatemalan highlands.
Wine-throated Hummingbird was formerly placed in the genus Atthis, together with the Bumblebee Hummingbird (Selasphorus heloisa). Both species are very similar, but with non-overlapping distribution ranges. The Bumblebee Hummingbird is restricted to the Mexican highlands north of the isthmus of Tehuantepec, and the Wine-throated Hummingbird (Selasphorus ellioti) is endemic to the highlands south of the isthmus, including southern Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras.
