Wine-throated Hummingbird was formerly placed in the genus Atthis, together with the Bumblebee Hummingbird (Selasphorus heloisa). Both species are very similar, but with non-overlapping distribution ranges. The Bumblebee Hummingbird is restricted to the Mexican highlands north of the isthmus of Tehuantepec, and the Wine-throated Hummingbird (Selasphorus ellioti) is endemic to the highlands south of the isthmus, including southern Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras.

In Guatemala, Wine-throated Hummingbird occurs above 1500 m (4900 ft), mainly above 2000 m (6560 ft). During the breeding season, males gather on leks.
