In a moment that will melt hearts everywhere, newborn Olivia reached out to touch her mother Stephanie’s face just seconds after being delivered. The touching scene was captured by birth photographer Selena Rollason in Brisbane, Australia, on January 11, showing the immediate and extraordinary bond between mother and child.

Stephanie, a pediatric nurse, gave birth to Olivia via cesarean at 39 weeks because the baby was breech. For her, skin-to-skin contact with Olivia as soon as possible was crucial. “When she reached out and touched my face, it was overwhelming. This tiny baby who had grown inside me for nine months seemed to instantly recognize me and know exactly where she belonged,” Stephanie shared.

Selena, who has photographed over 100 births, said she had never witnessed anything like this. “Newborns usually don’t have a sense of where they are or who they’re with right after birth, especially after a c-section. They’re often wrapped tightly in blankets and can’t move freely. But Olivia was placed on her mother’s chest and given the chance for immediate contact. She reached for her mother repeatedly—it was truly extraordinary,” she explained.

Stephanie added, “Seeing my baby continually reach out for me left me amazed. Being present for such a special moment—and being able to capture it in photos—is something I’ll treasure forever.”

Selena also highlighted the importance of humanizing cesarean births. “Cesareans have become very medicalized. Allowing skin-to-skin contact and a photographer’s presence brings the focus back to the human connection, acknowledging the emotional and psychological needs of both mother and baby. Moments like this are invaluable for their wellbeing.”
