Apple’s Third-Generation Foldable iPhone Could Feature Even Larger Displays
Apple has yet to launch its first foldable iPhone, but rumors are already looking several years ahead.
According to the latest report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is already planning a third-generation foldable iPhone, with a potential launch as early as 2028.
Gurman says Apple’s first foldable iPhone is expected to introduce what he describes as a “truly revolutionary design” this year. But the company’s plans reportedly extend well beyond that initial model, with at least two additional generations already mapped out.
Under the rumored timeline, the iPhone Ultra 2 could arrive in 2027, followed by the iPhone Ultra 3 as early as 2028.

iPhone Ultra 3 Could Get Bigger Displays
The third-generation foldable iPhone is reportedly being designed with slightly larger displays on both the inside and outside compared with its predecessors.
Apple’s first foldable iPhone is currently rumored to feature a 7.8-inch internal display and a 5.5-inch external screen.
If the latest report proves accurate, the Ultra 3 would represent another step forward in Apple’s foldable-phone strategy, with larger screen real estate potentially becoming one of its key upgrades.
More importantly, this is reportedly the first time the iPhone Ultra 3 has been mentioned in a leak, extending Apple’s rumored foldable iPhone roadmap by another year.
What Do We Know About the First iPhone Ultra?
Apple’s first foldable iPhone is expected to arrive later this year with an ultra-thin design and several major changes compared with current iPhone models.
Rumors suggest the device could use Touch ID instead of Face ID, feature Apple’s A20 chip, and include the company’s C2 modem.
The device is also expected to carry the “iPhone Ultra” name, with a rumored starting price of around $2,000.
That would make it one of the most expensive iPhones Apple has ever produced—and potentially position the foldable Ultra as a completely new premium tier within the iPhone lineup.
iPhone Ultra 2 May Already Be in Development
The rumors don’t stop with the first generation.
Chinese leaker Digital Chat Station, posting on Weibo, claims that Apple has already begun development of the iPhone Ultra 2.
According to the leak, the project has reportedly received internal approval and could reuse the display technology introduced with the first-generation foldable iPhone.
The second-generation model is rumored to arrive in fall 2027, potentially alongside the iPhone marking the 20th anniversary of Apple’s original smartphone.

That would mean Apple could be planning a remarkably aggressive three-generation roadmap for its foldable iPhone lineup:
2026 — iPhone Ultra
2027 — iPhone Ultra 2
2028 — iPhone Ultra 3
Of course, these details remain part of the rumor cycle, and Apple has not officially confirmed the existence, name, specifications, or release schedule of any foldable iPhone.
Still, the fact that leaks are already discussing a third-generation model before the first one has even reached consumers suggests Apple may be thinking about foldable iPhones as a long-term product category rather than a one-off experiment.
