What should have been the beginning of a beautiful new chapter became an unimaginable tragedy for Diogo Jota and his family.
Just days before the Liverpool and Portugal star lost his life in a devastating car accident, his wife and childhood sweetheart, Rute Cardoso, shared a heartfelt message that has since become painfully symbolic of the happiness they had finally achieved together.
After years of growing up side by side, supporting each other through life’s challenges and celebrating countless milestones together, Jota and Rute exchanged wedding vows on June 22, 2025.
The ceremony marked the fulfilment of a dream they had shared since their teenage years. Friends, family, teammates and fans joined them in celebrating a love story that had endured the pressures of fame, football and the passing of time.

The newlyweds shared a collection of stunning photographs from their special day across social media. The images radiated joy, love and hope for the future. Smiling faces, tender embraces and unforgettable moments captured a couple who appeared ready to spend a lifetime together.
Then, on July 1, Rute posted four breathtaking photographs of herself wearing her wedding dress. Alongside the images, she wrote four simple yet deeply meaningful words:
“My dream came true.”
At the time, the message represented pure happiness. It was the voice of a woman celebrating the love of her life and the family they had built together. Today, those same words carry a heartbreaking weight that no one could have imagined.

Just two days later, tragedy struck.
In the early hours of July 3, Jota and his younger brother, Andre Silva, were involved in a fatal car crash in Zamora, Spain. News of the accident sent shockwaves through the football world and beyond. Fans struggled to comprehend how a player who had been celebrating one of the happiest moments of his life could be gone so suddenly.
According to local authorities, the accident occurred on the A52 motorway near Cernadilla. Early investigations indicated that the vehicle may have suffered a tyre blowout while overtaking, causing it to leave the road. Both Jota and Andre tragically lost their lives.
The heartbreaking loss came after what had been a remarkable period in Jota’s career. He had enjoyed another successful season with Liverpool and remained an important figure for Portugal. Many expected him to play a key role in Portugal’s 2026 World Cup campaign.
Although he is no longer physically present, Jota’s memory continues to inspire those who knew him. Portugal’s national team have made special arrangements to honour their fallen teammate throughout the tournament. Players will wear commemorative wristbands featuring the names of all 26 squad members, alongside Jota’s name, ensuring that he remains part of the team he loved so dearly.
Midfielder Vitinha explained that the squad embraced the tribute with great affection after receiving the wristbands from Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro. For the players, it was more than a symbolic gesture—it was a way of carrying Jota’s spirit onto the pitch.
