Chico, a pit bull from rural North Carolina, endured ten long years of neglect and isolation. Confined to a small, cluttered yard by his adoptive family, he lived without proper care or companionship. His plight caught the eye of neighbor Gricel Guerrero, who repeatedly voiced concerns about Chico’s living conditions, suggesting he needed veterinary attention and regular exercise. Unfortunately, the family dismissed her warnings, insisting that Chico was too difficult and aggressive with other dogs, justifying his chained life.

Determined not to give up, Guerrero reached out to multiple rescue organizations. Though many were unable to help, Diva’s Safe Haven & Thrift finally agreed to take Chico in. With persistence, Guerrero convinced the family to surrender him, and Chico was soon transported to the rescue center.
At Diva’s, Chico began receiving the medical care he desperately needed. He arrived mostly deaf, with tumors and arthritis affecting his hind legs. Yet, despite these challenges, Chico embraced his new life with joy—playing with staff and fellow dogs, and showing a gentle, affectionate nature. The team at Diva’s describe him as a resilient and loving dog, a true testament to the transformative power of care and compassion after years of hardship.
