That was the first thing we said when the shelter sent us Penelope’s photo. We truly had no words. Because no words feel strong enough to describe the condition she’s in.
Emaciated. Starved. Barely holding on.
Penelope was adopted from the shelter in 2022 — just a puppy back then, full of promise and a future that should have been safe. And now, nearly four years later, this is what she looks like. Ten pounds. Skin and bone. So thin that it almost doesn’t look real. But it is real. This is her reality. This photo is not edited. It’s not exaggerated. It’s the devastating truth of what she has endured.
We believe deeply in transparency with our rescue intakes — sometimes painfully so. But we will never sensationalize suffering. We will never add details we don’t know or create stories for shock value. These animals have already been through enough. Their truth deserves respect.
Because Penelope’s situation is part of an active cruelty investigation, there are details we cannot share right now. And honestly, we’re still trying to understand how something like this happens at all. While animal control officers and the shelter work to uncover the truth, our role is clear.
We will focus on healing her.
On nourishing her fragile body. On giving her safety, warmth, and patience. On reminding her — slowly, gently — that kindness still exists.
Penelope survived something unimaginable. Now, she deserves the chance to live.
Please keep her in your thoughts. Her journey isn’t over — but this is the beginning of her second chance. 💔➡️❤️
