In the rivers and streams of Australia swims one of nature’s most extraordinary creatures: the platypus. Known for its duck-like bill, webbed feet, and egg-laying habits, this small mammal is already a marvel of evolution. But recent research has revealed that the platypus may hold secrets with the power to combat deadly superbugs threatening human health.

Unlike most mammals, platypuses—along with their distant cousins, the echidnas—lay eggs and feed their young with milk secreted through the skin. With no teats to nurse from, mother platypuses simply ooze milk onto their bellies, and their babies lap it up. It’s an unusual feeding method, but it may also hold an unusual medical gift.

Scientists at CSIRO and Deakin University discovered that platypus milk contains a unique protein, nicknamed the “Shirley Temple”, which has potent antibacterial properties. This protein has the ability to fight bacteria resistant to conventional antibiotics, a discovery that could have life-saving implications in a world increasingly threatened by drug-resistant infections.

“Platypuses are such weird animals that it makes sense for them to have weird biochemistry,” explains Dr. Janet Newman, lead author of the study. Indeed, the combination of egg-laying and skin-secreted milk creates a biology unlike any other mammal, one that could hold natural remedies humans are only beginning to understand.

As the World Health Organization has warned of a looming “post-antibiotic era,” the platypus reminds us that sometimes, nature itself may hold the cure.
