It only takes a moment to change everything. For former high school basketball coach Clarence Nelson and his wife, that moment came on a quiet California highway — when a semi-truck slammed into their vehicle, ending two lives that had meant so much to so many.

The crash happened in Ontario, California, when a truck allegedly driven by Jashanpreet Singh, an illegal immigrant from India, collided with several cars. Authorities later confirmed that Singh was under the influence of drugs at the time of the crash. According to the Department of Homeland Security, he had illegally entered the United States in 2022 and was released under the Biden administration’s border policy.

For those who knew Nelson, the news felt like a punch to the heart. As a former assistant basketball coach at Pomona High School, he was more than a mentor — he was a guiding light for countless students. His passion for the game, his humor, and his belief in second chances turned troubled teens into graduates, and teammates into family.

Now, candles line the sidewalk outside Pomona High. Students wear his old team shirts, whispering prayers for a man who never stopped believing in them. “Coach Nelson believed in all of us,” one player said, holding back tears. “He was the reason I stayed in school.”

This tragedy has reignited debate about immigration enforcement and public safety, but at its core, it’s a story of a family lost and a community grieving.

May Clarence and his wife rest in peace — and may their story remind us how fragile life can be. 💔
