Vatsala, affectionately known as “Dadi” (grandmother), passed away peacefully at the age of 100 in Madhya Pradesh’s Panna Tiger Reserve, drawing the curtain on a century-long legacy of wisdom, resilience, and gentle leadership. Originally brought from Kerala decades ago, Vatsala became more than a guardian of the forest — she was its soul.
Revered by rangers and adored by visitors, she led her herd with calm authority, nurtured countless calves, and stood as a living symbol of endurance. In her final days, weakened by age and leg injuries, she collapsed near the Khairaiyaan drain. Despite tireless efforts by the forest team, she passed on Tuesday, surrounded by those who loved her as family.

Vatsala’s presence shaped generations — not just of elephants, but of people. Her memory will live on in the whispering trees she once protected, and in every footstep that echoes through the forest she called home.
