After losing both of his parents, Roscoe, a 3-year-old orangutan, sank into deep depression. He refused to eat and showed no signs of improvement despite medical care. His caretakers feared that heartbreak alone might claim his life.
Then, fate intervened.
Around the same time, a sick and aging dog was found wandering the zoo grounds. Staff brought the dog to the animal treatment center—where Roscoe happened to be receiving care. That unexpected meeting changed everything.
From the moment they met, the two formed a bond neither had known before. It was as if their shared sense of loss connected them instantly. Since then, they’ve become inseparable.
Roscoe rediscovered hope and joy through his new friend. They’re always together—eating, playing, and even sleeping side by side. They now live in Northern California, where swimming is their favorite activity. Though Roscoe is still timid around water, he braves it with his loyal friend by his side.
Together, they’ve learned that even in the darkest moments, friendship can bring light—and that love, in any form, can heal a broken heart.
