[Video] A Rare Black Jaguar Cub Arrives at the UK’s Big Cat Sanctuary

On April 6, a historic moment took place at the Big Cat Sanctuary in Kent, England — the birth of a rare black jaguar cub.

While every new arrival is celebrated, this birth is particularly special. Black jaguars are incredibly uncommon, making up only around 10% of the species. The cub’s mother, Keira, has the classic golden coat with rosettes, while her striking black coloring comes from her father, Nero, who carries the rare gene.

For now, the little female is simply called “baby,” but the sanctuary has launched a fundraising vote to choose her official name. Supporters can donate £5 (about $7) to vote for one of three options — Inka, Into, or Killari. The poll closes on August 1, with a quarter of the funds going toward jaguar conservation projects in Costa Rica.

“We are absolutely thrilled to welcome this beautiful cub into our family,” said curator Bryony Smith. “We knew Keira was expecting — all that was left was the joyful wait for her arrival.”

Born at 11:10 a.m., the cub has been thriving, showing quick development typical of jaguars. “She was born with her eyes already open and walking confidently at just two weeks,” Smith noted.

This birth is part of the European Endangered Species Breeding Programme, aimed at safeguarding jaguar populations amid ongoing threats in the wild.

According to Smith, the energetic cub is keeping her mother busy: “She’s full of personality — playful, adventurous, and not too happy when Keira decides it’s time for a bath!”

By August, when the sanctuary reopens to visitors, the lively young jaguar is expected to be exploring her outdoor habitat for the first time.
